Freeze Your Fruit
- Don’t throw out unused fruit – freeze it
- Peel/Chop if necessary
- Store in freezer in reusable zip lock bags ready for future use. Add to smoothies or warm in the microwave and add to porridge/yoghurt
Freeze Your Bread
- Freeze your loaves of bread and use only what you need. Bread will always be fresh. Hint: Take out required slices and allow to thaw or place in the microwave for approximately 10 seconds or so. Place remaining loaf straight back into freezer or slices will stick together
- This also works for bread rolls. Buy a six pack of rolls – wrap individually in cling wrap/zip lock bag, place in freezer
Add Flavour to your Pantry
- Adding a spice rack to your kitchen accessories is a great way to add flavour to your food
- Herbs and spices can gradually be added to your spice rack over time
- Versatile spices include cinnamon/basil/parsley/chilli flakes/oregano/coriander
- Stock cubes are inexpensive and are a great way to add flavour to couscous, rice and soups instead of plain water
- Bottles of essence, such as vanilla and peppermint are cheap, last a long time in the pantry and only a very small amount is needed because of its strong flavour
Saving Solutions
- Keep an eye out for non perishable food on sale – may be a good time to stock the pantry. Including: tinned fish eg. tuna/baked beans/flour/almond meal/protein powder/sustagen/rice/pasta/stock cubes/jars of herbs and spices – the list goes on….
- Useful/inexpensive kitchen utensils which are handy include: measuring jug/measuring spoons/grater/ vegetable peeler/wooden spoon/chopping board/large mugs
- Drink tap water, its free….don’t like tap water, shop around for an inexpensive filter jug
- Stop food wastage. Keep pantry and fridge organised to avoid finding out of date food hiding in the back corner
